What Star Wars Can Teach Us About Business Technology
Since its debut, the Star Wars franchise has introduced themes, symbols, and technological advancements that have permeated our collective subconscious. The far out world has inspired developments in AI droid technology, holograms, and bionic prosthetics. The overlap between Star Wars and technology doesn’t end there, though.
We can also learn a lot about the less glamorous side of technology - business technology, process automation, content/records management, file sharing, etc.
Star Wars has taught us:
You have unique needs
“Already know you, that which you need.” – Yoda
Unless you’re a Stormtrooper and genetically identical to hundreds of others (which you’re probably not), you are unique. Your corporate structure, company history, and business priorities aren’t identical to any other organization.
We usually already know what our companies need. We know exactly what tech tools we need to empower our teams. Why then, are leaders second-guessing their requirements and getting ‘sold’ on what they should want or need.
You know what makes you unique and you need customized business applications that support your company’s unique way of doing business.
“Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” – Yoda
Star Wars gave us numerous examples of forward-thinking, strategic risk takers who embraced change and stood above the chaos. While life in a cubicle may not be as harrowing as an intergalactic battle between good and evil, many people often react to IT changes with similar dramatics.
Why? We instinctively fear change. At the heart of it; we fear that our work will be lost, we will be distracted with training and not get to the work, we will invest a fortune and the new tool will be only marginally better (or maybe even worse).
We would all be wise to head Yoda’s advice. Your fear may be keeping your team in an outdated IT environment, which will breed anger and hate and suffering as competitors surpass you with ease. Embrace change and let go of fear.

The destruction of the first Death Star taught us that brute force (the Death Star) is often defeated by agility (a single X Wing fighter hitting at the right place, at the right moment). Focus on finding the little push and apply it on the tipping point. In IT, like everywhere else, more features, resources, or people may not always be better. It’s strategically targeted opportunities and smart thinking that will win in the end.
On the flip side, the Death Star was built to instill fear throughout the galaxy. Considering that this wasn’t even successful in its first attempt, the dark side should have exercised some adaptability and agile thinking. Instead, they pursued the same strategy again in “Return of the Jedi.” And - shocker - they failed again!
Your business solutions shouldn’t be big, bulky solutions. They should be innovative and adaptable. Choose solutions with minimal process disruptions, costs, or compliance compromises as you adapt to competitive changes over time.
Beauty and power can be complementary

Star Wars taught us that anyone can be both a princess and a warrior.
“Princess Leia is an embodiment of intelligence, beauty, courage and independence. From her signature hairstyle to her long white cloak dress, she looked gorgeous and stayed strong when Darth Vader tortured her for information regarding the location of the Rebel base.” - Huffpost
Good enterprise technology has a lot in common with Leia. A beautiful UX/design can be backed by smart processes, powerful tools, and a secure infrastructure.
Top-down approaches fail

Often in enterprise IT, executives huddle together to strategize what conditions to impose on the rest of the organization. Sometimes, this ‘group’ is as small as the CEO alone. Leaders beware that this Dark Side approach makes a far less effective organization than highly collaborative group of Rebels with the right tools (i.e. G Suite, Workplace, AODocs, etc.) Robotic troops of trainers and implementation teams will inevitably be met with resistance.

Of course you and/or your IT team strives to select and implement the best solutions possible, but if you slip, Star Wars teaches us that redemption is right around the corner. A new platform won’t change the mistakes made in the past, but it can make all the difference moving forward.
